Well, because the thick bar line does not look like a thick dot :-) The idea is that the given string should match the output as close as possible.

My recommendation: just pick something you like and run with it. Right now this is in the "sour spot" of bikeshedding. We should either have a formal discussion (which waits until GLISS), or just get something done by you picking arbitrarily. I say that you should pick arbitrarily right now (or in the near future).
