tried looking at scheme-mode and it would appear that the indentation
engine is supposed to treat everything starting with "def" the same
manner with regard to indentation, so define*-public or similar should
work the same as define with regard to indentation. I had the
impression from some reports that this may not be the case.

Ah, and probably I misunderstood your general
'don't trust emacs if it produces unsatisfactory output'
and assumed this meant 'we don't want *this* output'.
So probably everything is ok, I don't know.
