This is also inspired by the list in <>, which could serve as a model for an alist, where keys may have values of type list? (if, as with ligatures, multiple features can be combined), symbol-or-boolean? (if features are mutually exclusive, like letter case, number case or vertical position), or boolean?.

Downside of this approach: I don’t know of a way to override alists in markup.
