I've taken a look and this basically only does something for GUILEV2.
I'm puzzled about the std::exception thing (why should that come up now
when it didn't do so before?) but that does not look like being able to
_cause_ rather than fix a problem.  Ok for you if I split this into
separate commits?  Or want to do this on your own?
