The problem isn't converting EPS to PNG with alpha, but the other way 
around.

PS/EPS code read by Ghostscript can contain transparency operators, but 
Ghostscript only supports operators that set the transparency, e.g., for 
the current path, like the color. Its image operator doesn't have 
support for transparency on some pixels and not others.
