Compiling_Lily

I'm trying to compile 1.7.15 on RehHat 8.0. I have installed the things
required for this and I have updated guile to 1.6 (--nodeps, etc.). When I
run ./configure I get:

ERROR: Please install required programs: echo no guile-config 1.6
(installed: )
--------------

According to the wiki page:

! Where is guile-config

Old RedHat RPMS of GUILE didn't include guile-config. You need guile-config
as it was produced during the RPM build run. Build the RPM from source
(`.src.rpm'), and use the guile-config that is in
`/usr/src/redhat/BUILD/guile-1.3/guile-config/'.

-------------------

I have downloaded guile-1.6.0-4.src.rpm but I don't really know how to
build the rpm to produce the guile-config file I need. Nor do I know where
it should go once I have (help?).

Also, there is a warning on the lilypond.org pages:

WARNING: if you choose to upgrade to GCC 3.x, enquire if your distribution
supports g++ 3.x and flex. At the time of writing (Fri Jul 5 2002), no
distribution that we know of ships a flex that generates gcc-3.1.x
compliant C++ code.

RH8.0 comes with 3.2-7. It is *not* 3.1. Does it work with flex (2.5.4a-26)?

Thanks,

The irony is that Bill Gates claims to be making a stable operating system
and Linus Torvalds claims to be trying to take over the world.
