Help with LilyPond on OS X

Sorry for the newbie question here but when it comes to UNIX, I am 
woefully inexperienced.  I'm trying to install LilyPond on OS X 10.2.8. 
 When I run the command "fink install lilypond-unstable" I am presented 
with several options for installing the package dependencies,  Once I 
get through these, I get an error which reads:

configure: error: No ar utility found.
### execution of (cd failed, exit code 1
Failed: compiling db4-4.0.14-12 failed

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks,
