Strange!
- What operating system and distribution do you have?
- How did you install 2.1.20?
- Do you get any warning from the lilypond command?
- You will get more information if you run lilypond with the
flag --verbose or even --debug. If you send the output to
the mailing list, I'm sure you can get more constructive help.
Finally, note that the last releases in the development series
may have a number of bugs (even though I don't recognize your
problem) since the main hackers are doing some major changes
to the code.

some minor changes in the .ly format, executing lilypond on source files
doesn't generate a pdf file anymore, where it did before. Are there any
