The split stem is inferior to the offset stem which Gardner
Read thought he was improving, because you can have multiple
offset stems but having multiple split stems is ridiculous.
See Villa Lobos' Etude No. 4 for examples of offset stems. 

A better way than either IMO is a zero tuplet bracket.
