Then I'd better get this right...

When I use

    \once \override Score.BarLine #'space-alist = #'((first-note  
extra-space . 1.5))

I get

    programming error: No spacing entry from BarLine to `right-edge'
    continuing, cross fingers

The output looks great, but I have to set the value independently for  
each measure (i.e., it would be nice to have a "minimum-distance"  
option), and there is a programming error message (= bug).

p.s. Lilypond still rocks! The fact that I'm worrying about such  
little details -- which were the *least* of my problems with  
FinSibIgEtc -- is a great testament to Lilypond's awesomeness... =)
