Thanks for the pointers.

I have many 2.4 scores with default font text tediously sized and
positioned, so would like to use, in 2.8, exactly the 2.4 default font.
I've been unable to determine what that is.  It looks very close to, but not
exactly, cmr10 (roman upright medium).

The most common TeX fonts are available as type1 fonts, see:

  http://www.tex.ac.uk/cgi-bin/texfaq2html?label=psfchoice

Follow the links at the bottom.

(Which font was used by lilypond 2.4, was it computer modern?)
If you are after the computer modern, get:

  http://www.tex.ac.uk/tex-archive/fonts/amsfonts/ps-type1/amsps-pc.zip
