Use "$variable" only inside a #{ #} expression. When in plain scheme,
just use "variable", without $.
And the music function should only return the TextScriptEvent part.
fingerSwitch =
#(define-music-function (parser location text) (string?)
(make-music 'TextScriptEvent
'direction 1
'text (markup #:finger text)))
