A .ps file is produced but can not produce a .pdf file.

That's really strange. Over here, the 2.8.6-1 package works excellently in
Windows XP.

When gsview is used to display on screen - it works.

That's also strange, unless you have unmarked the "Safer" option in GSView.

When a printout is attempted, a massive list of faults is produced but not printout.
You mean when you print out the Postscript file? In that case, that's completely normal since it's not intended for printing, only to be able to produce a PDF
file using Ghostscript (the step that fails for your for some reason).

I changed the .ps file to give the correct location of fonts ( file had a non-
existent lilypond directory path ) and the list reduced to one fault - the aybabtu.otf file was not valid.
What path did the .ps file contain?

What do I do now? Go back to 1.9.8 which used produce .pdf files and printout or can you fix the bug/s.
Do you mean 2.9.x? You might also want to try earlier 2.8.x versions, such as 2.8.0-5. The installers are available in http://download.linuxaudio.org/lilypond/binaries/mingw/

However, the question is really why Ghostscript fails to produce the PDF file in the first place. If you run LilyPond from a command line, you can add the flag --verbose to get a more informative printout. It seems that you have good
competence about Postscript, Ghostscript and GSView. Could it even be that
you have set some environment variables that affects how Ghostscript works?
Note that the lilypond package includes its own copy of the Ghostscript binary, C:\Program Files\LilyPond\usr\bin\gs.exe which is called from within lilypond
to do the conversion from PS to PDF.

If nothing else helps, you may want to try to edit the file
C:\Program Files\LilyPond\usr\share\lilypond\current\scm\lily.scm
and change the line
(gs-font-load #t
into
(gs-font-load #f
Then the full fonts will be embedded into the PS files.
