MIDI

I just don't get how to make a file into a MIDI file.

For example, I have my input:

\relative c' {
\new PianoStaff \with {
  \override VerticalAlignment #'forced-distance = #12
  \override DynamicLineSpanner #'staff-padding = #2.8 }
<<
  \time 6/8
  \new Staff { 
  \key d \major 
  \tempo 4.= 84

...music...

}

  >>
}

So what do I put where, and what else do I need to do with it to make it a
MIDI file?
