The "man" page of 'gcc' has 62 occurrences of this word, the first  
one being:
  Some options control the preprocessor and others the compiler itself.

The C++ ISO+IEC+14882-1998 standard has 3 occurrences of this word,  
one in section [lex.operators] 2.12 Operators and punctuators.
