If you just want the full measure rests to stay on the middle line but the directions of stems, slurs, ... to always be upwards in your top voice, you can also revert only the specific setting related to the full measure rests, see http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/lilypond-user/2004-03/msg00198.html
