Ah, one of my favorite pet peeves.  .bash_profile is run if it's a login 
shell, and .bashrc if it's a non-login shell!  I put all the content in 
my .bash_profile, rm'd .bashrc, then did a ln -s .bash_profile .bashrc.  
That way no matter how you log in it works, and since both are names of 
the same file, you can edit it under either name.
