Hi Jan (et al.): Excellent suggestion. However, I wouldn't recommend using
\set StaffGroup.instrumentName = \markup { Piano \hspace #1 }
since this means that the actual instrument name has a space in it — this is mixing content with presentation. Rather, I recommend adjusting the StaffGroup.InstrumentName #'padding property: you'll get the same result, without negatively affecting the use of the instrumentName elsewhere in the score.
