OK, Jonathan, thanks. Let's see if we together can get a bit further with
solving this problem since we have very similar systems - mine works,
yours doesn't - so all we have to do is find what is different. I'd bet it is something to do with the different history of LP installs on the two systems.

First, a couple of questions:

1) Do you remember the version number of the earliest LilyPond you
installed on this system? In particular, was it earlier than 2.11.43,
released around March 08?

I bought the laptop in June and installed whatever the latest version was at the time.

2) When you upgrade do you use the uninstall utility that comes with
LilyPond to remove the old version, or some other method?

I have only upgraded a couple of times, and it was in response to this thread, just to test it out. It's possible that I upgraded one more time before that. I always use the Add/Remove program tool built into Windows, accessed by the Control Panel. On Linux I always run the uninstall script that comes with Lilypond, but I don't know how to do this on Windows. Like I said, I don't use Windows regularly (...poking in the Windows partition now...) Aha! I just noticed the uninstall.exe file in the Lilypond directory! Should I try running that and then doing a fresh reinstall of Lilypond? Does the Windows Add/Remove GUI use this uninstall.exe file or does it use something else? I can try this after lunch if you think it's a good idea.
