He has 2.6 installed via fink or macports, but musicxml is using
the /usr/bin/python which is 2.3.5.

It's the same maoing python thing that's been going on for over
three years.  Search the mailists for convert-ly, and/or just
manually change /usr/bin/python to /usr/bin/env python.
