Stems not appearing in banjo tabs

Hey guys - 

I just started using Lilypond and am having an issue with stems appearing in banjo tabs. Any thoughts or suggestions? Here is the text I have:

\new TabStaff <<

  \set TabStaff.tablatureFormat = #fret-number-tablature-format-banjo

  \set TabStaff.stringTunings = #banjo-open-g-tuning

  {

  \stemDown

    g b c e a

 }

This is what appears for me:

test.pdf

Currently running on Ubuntu using CLI to render the PDFs.
