Now that I think more about it, I see a reasonable way to make it work again:
verticalSpace = {
\override Staff.Clef #'minimum-Y-extent = #'(-20 . 20)
\override Staff.Clef #'vertical-skylines = #'() }
This is good, because it minimum-X-extent is very useful for getting extra
space just where you need it.
