Thanks for the reply - you example does not compile on 2.16

and I can't find the section you referred to
http://www.lilypond.org/doc/v2.17/Documentation/notation/breaks
is section 4.4.3 at the moment.
But I will keep my eyes open for outside-staff-priority in the docs now
that you have alerted me!
