That isn’t the right way to think of it. The [] aren’t placed _around_ the notes they apply to, but rather attached to the first and last notes as _post events_ (just like slurs, ties, fingering, articulations and many other things). That’s why one writes
d[ g d g]
and not
d [g d g]
