Newbie event question

Hello folks,

IIUC, at some point in its work, LilyPond represents the music as a sequene of 
events, each with a position in time and a duration.

How are the grace notes handled in that context? They are actually displayed 
and played, but their duration is not taken into account in the duration of 
measures.
