Sure enough. I got the latest version, and that’s what happens now.

I had this:   2.22.0-1  on OS X 10.14.6

My use of Lillypond is sporadic. I prolly should start every project
with a fresh download.

Well, to be fair, I would expect all versions of LilyPond to have produced that error. As such, the issue was likely more about your environment and workflow, checking to see if some other process was hiding the error message.
