WHY would you merge the B quarter-note with the B eighth-note?  They are
not even in the same time-step.

Then perhaps once again, I'm misreading what I'm transcribing... Wouldn't be the first time... Here's what I'm trying to reproduce:


I think that's a misprint in the source, and the upstem should have a flag.  I presume that below there are two sets of words with different numbers of syllables which require different grouping of the notes.
