I'm not a drummer, and haven't set drum music (yet - I set Brass Band 
music and they have drumkits), but I'm wondering whether it might work 
to use spacers?

Can you use spacers instead of rests? So you'd put them in (I presume) 
the Crash. You might have to use tags so you can explicitly tell that 
part to use either a spacer or a rest.
