Here we get a serious error. Basically your PDFLaTeX installation is
broken. A few questions:
- do you have pdflatex installed (it should exist in Debian)
- do you have a pdflatex executanle on your computer
- does the ./configure of LW say: "checking for PDF doc... enabled"
- is PDFLaTeX usable on your computer in a more general manner? (*)
Yes pdflatex is installed, but I think I've solved the problem.  It appears that you nee the package 'tetex-extra' on potato for this to work (see http://packages.debian.org/stable/tex/tetex-extra.html for the contents of the package).  I now get the output:

[...]

) [57] (liquidwar.aux) )

Build complete.
Type "make install" to install Liquid War 5.5.0.

(*) this last point might be hard to check if you don't know TeX very
well, so I'll forgive you if you can't answer 8-)

What I believe is that you PDFLaTeX installation is broken.
The only check I make in the ./configure script is to check if the
executable pdflatex is here. I should check it better but do not really
know how to do it indeed. Otherwise I would have done it 8-}
I think it's just going to take a check for the relevant file that is in the tetex-extra package - but I don't know enough to tell you which one it is!

BTW, does "make install" succeed after this?
Yes make install works - no warnings or errors.
Thanks for your help, and have a nice day.

Christian.

PS: as a side note, there's a LW mailing list, which you might be
interested in subscribing to. The discussion we are having could easily
be followed there, and messages would be archived to that people can
then dig them and find valuable informations 8-). But of course it's not
mandatory, I'd understand that you don't wish to continuously get Liquid
War related stuff in your mailbox. Anyway, here's the URL:
http://mail.freesoftware.fsf.org/mailman/listinfo/liquidwar-user
I'll subscribe for a little while!

Colin.
