I've just looked at tailor documentation/sources more carefully and in
fact using this option is very simple and seems to be exactly what we need
so I did restart the process with it as it results in much more reasonable
history, e.g. right now (at the very beginning of the conversion) I have:

% svn log file:///var/svn/lmi
------------------------------------------------------------------------
r3 | chicares | 2004-05-25 17:47:40 +0200 (Tue, 25 May 2004) | 1 line

Moved wx skeleton up one subdirectory: binary files flagged
------------------------------------------------------------------------
r2 | chicares | 2004-05-15 22:00:55 +0200 (Sat, 15 May 2004) | 1 line

Initial revision
------------------------------------------------------------------------
r1 | zeitlin | 2009-06-03 13:42:08 +0200 (Wed, 03 Jun 2009) | 1 line

This directory will host the upstream sources
------------------------------------------------------------------------

so the only problem is the artificial first revision but hopefully it's not
a big problem (as I don't know how to get rid of it).

So I deleted the old dump file and will update it with the new version,
with the correct history as soon as the import finishes (in about 2 hours).

Sorry for the mistake with the first attempt,
VZ
