Follow-up Comment #11:

Didn't see that "The c argument is an int, the value of which the application
shall ensure is a character representable as an unsigned char or equal to the
value of the macro EOF" part - these functions are fundamentally broken and
should be fixed.

Applied Axel's patch which ensures valid input range, respecting Mike's
comments.
