Florian,
I've been using the BSD API exclusively, and haven't had any trouble
with it.  I chose lwIP because I know it gives me both options.  At
the moment I am working on systems that do not require me to strip out
the BSD API, but knowing that I can do that is what makes lwIP quite
attractive.
