I don't see anything amiss... but I must admit I am not a FreeRTOS user so 
probably not the best set of eyes to be performing code reviews.

I should point out that, if that is unmodified code from the FreeRTOS
download (sorry, I have not actually looked yet), then it is not a
complete driver.  It is somewhat old and was originally intended to
demonstrate the use of the kernel, rather than demonstrate a fully
functional MAC driver.  I believe I have some updates that were sent to
me by various users somewhere on file, although it might take a while to
find.

As I recall not all the error cases are tested for and handled, although
the description of your problem does not sound related to that.
