Upgrading is always a good idea if you can - lots of bug fixes all the time!

I would try comparing a packet capture in the case that works to a packet 
capture in the case that doesn't and see if you can see any differences.  
Perhaps you can ask whoever admins the company's DNS server if it is generating 
any error messages or logs in response to your requests that go unanswered.
