I guess what I am saying is that, in my own knowledge-free opinion, I
bet that most people who set up lynx do *not* set up local help pages.
You pointed out in your first mail that there are still many copies of
2.4.2 out there. If the maintainer is that far out of date, I'd guess
they are probably not the type to bother to set up local pages.

So, if the central help sites (at, say, ukans and crl and "official"
mirrors if any exist) are updated to include the current version, then
most users will be up to date. Anyone who sets up local pages is then
free to remove this reference from the root help page if they don't want
to be outdated eventually (after all, we are just talking about 30
seconds of editing). Or, perhaps, the version of the main help page in
the distribution kit can have the page already edited.

In summary, I am saying that I like to stay abreast of the current
version and it is certainly workable (if not philosophically ideal) to
include that information in the root page of central help sites. Ukans
already does (though it is a version behind now). If I am the only one
who likes this information to be available without explicitly looking
around for it, obviously this should be the end of it; otherwise,
perhaps you should more seriously consider including it.

BTW, thanks for your prompt responses!

Long live Lynx,

Andy
