How about just not requiring that *new* code uses those conventions /
macros?
Making such a change at a point where there are several experimental
development lines which have to be merged is a bad thing. When/if there
is one stable, merged version, such a change could be made to *that*
(if it makes sense at all), so that new development could start from that
in several directions.
Don't make diff'ing harder than it has to be.
