There are many pages with pictures/image links without an ALT. What about
Images without an ALT could get an "automatic" ALT, derived from the name
of the image. If you have for example
  <IMG SRC="logo.gif">
  it would get displayed as
which is more descriptive than [IMAGE] or [INLINE] or [LINK]..
  What do you think?
I think you have to distinguish between images that are just there and
images that are the content of a link -- i.e. buttons.

I posted a related notion for expanding what now gets rendered
as [LINK] to the To-Do page at

Linkname: Lynx Development To Do List

I used angle brackes to set of a variable in what I wrote, and the
way the guestbook works this gets eaten on the way to your screen, so
it's not totally legible. (It's under "other features")

The basic idea there was a short-term fix of adding the _full_
URL cited in the link text, as for example
[LINK to href-value_inserted_here]

In the long term I think we should be working toward the day that
the TITLE values for pages get percolated forward so clients in
text mode could use them as anchor text. This sure beats [dot].

As for the things that come up [INLINE] or [IMAGE], it is hard to
say what to do automatically. Many of them actually deserve to
have ALT="" so that in pure text mode they Just Go Away.
