While this story doesn't mention Lynx, it does seem related to the topic
of blind access to the Internet which comes up on Lynxdev from time to time.
Reuter Monday 970407 -- German Firms Launch Online Service for Blind
BONN -- A group of German companies said Monday they plan to launch
an online computer service that would provide news and information
for the blind.
The service -- dubbed "Cityweb plus" -- will deliver news and
information over the Internet in text form to a brail display linked
to a personal computer. Cost will be 40 marks ($23.75) a month.
The service was developed by an industry consortium including
publisher Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung, computer maker Siemens
Nixdorf and media giant Bertelsmann.
The companies plan to unveil the service on Tuesday at a conference on
electronic commerce for small and mid-sized companies sponsored by the
Group of Seven industrial nations and hosted by Germany.
The service is expected to become operational later this year. The
companies plan to introduce a text-to-speech enhancement that would
read news and electronic mail aloud to blind PC users.
Wolfgang Kitza, chairman of Telemedia, the Bertelsmann subsidiary
responsible for the project, said there were around 155,000 blind
people in Germany, of which 12,000 work on computers.
