It won't compile without defining EXP_CHARTRANS any more, and I don't plan
to reinstate that.  It has become too much of an annoyance to try to
maintain additional code that (imperfectly) keeps the old behavior, and
which nobody would want anyway.  There's no way back now. :)
(Well you can always grab an older version, of course.)

There are still lots of "#ifdef EXP_CHARTRANS" in the code, but as it says
in CHANGES.new (modulo spelling error...): "Regard #ifdef EXP_CHARTRANS as
some strange kind of comment for now, until it goes away."

So --disable-char-trans should be removed from configure's flags, and the
various places that mention it...
