Maybe I'm way out in left field, but by accident did you happen to
reset one of the following in your .lynxrc file:
     preferred document c(H)arset : ^A)ssume charset if unknown  : 
     display (C)haracter set      : Raw 8-bit or CJK m(O)de?
Has anything changed recently in your terminal emulation configuration?
