Jason McBrayer & Eric pointed out that forking is resource-intensive.

thanx: in that case, it may well be best to leave disable as default,
but shouldn't the docs be warning people of these problems?
i'm willing to amend my patches (again), following further comment.

this -- & the printer patches -- really bring out
how deficient Lynx documentation is in some places.
