Most commercial sites will try and set cookies these days.  If you weren't
expecting one, the most likely reason is to allow them to track your accesses
for market research purposes.  Other reasons are to dispense with a formal
logon and to correlate accesses within a single session, e.g. to mainta
a "shopping cart".

NB the web provider of apparently non-commercial sites may well track you,
even if the site owner has no particular requirement for this.
