I've been checking it with the 'k' option. I see other keys getting mapped 'q', 'g', etc... but when I changed anything that requires '0x' it doesn't show it mapped and the key still has the previous behavior.

hmm - the "k" (show keymap) command does show that the setting takes
effect.  However, the default bindings for the keys are what's being
used.

(I'm looking further, to see what the full story is).
