Follow-up Comment #1, task #10750 (project maposmatic):
I don't think this is possible in a reliable manner. In the current
MapOSMatic version, we've tried to filter out what a "city" is, by selecting
only admin_level 8, but it turned out to be incorrect for many countries in
the world.
Therefore, there isn't an uniform and coherent mechanism to determine to
which city a particular street belongs too, so I don't think this feature can
really be implemented correctly.
IMO, MapOSMatic is really primarily designed for admin boundary based
renderings. The fact that bbox rendering are crappy should not be an incentive
to add more crappiness into MapOSMatic, but rather should be an incentive to
add more admin boundaries into OSM.
