Thanks, it was libtoolize looking into my (incomplete) LD_LIBRARY_PATH.
Also note that there are problems in downloading basic packages:
1. Eg, ftp://ftp.cs.tu-berlin.de/pub/gnu/gcc/gcc-4.7.1/gcc-4.7.1.tar.bz2
2. When download fails a zero length package is created which needs to
be removed manually since a subsequent (corrected) wget path would
create a duplicate (.1) suffix.
