Guess I might need to do an upgrade at sometime to my O/S.

I've added some optional native builds of automake and autoconf in the mean time:

To build these, pull from master and run:

make automake MXE_TARGETS=NATIVE

and they'll be installed in their own ./usr/native/bin directory that is visible to mxe but won't affect anything else on your system. They take 10 seconds to run here, so could you try that and then continue the normal mxe build?
