I think you need the java service wrapper, which as it says is a wrapper
for the JVM. It looks for stalled JVMs etc and restarts them.

As it generates PID for the wrapper and also for the JVM you can then
use monit to monitor the service wrapper, incase it stalls.

I have a custom swing app that runs in this fashion wrapped with the
java service wrapper and then double monitored by monit.
