I found the problem, it was in my shell aliases:

$ alias dpkg-buildpackage
alias dpkg-buildpackage='dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot
-i^MT\|\\.pc\|\\.mt\|_MTN'

That's because I maintain my Debian packaging scripts in monotone.
Unfortunately, this meant that the .diff.gz excludes differences in,
a.o., tests/syntax_errors_in_.mtn-ignore/* !

Rebuilding -7 with the alias disabled now.  Sorry for the sweat.
