This looks to me like you have incompatible automake and autoconf
installations. I know nothing about installing this stuff on a Mac,
but one thing that might work is to locate the highest-numbered
auto*-VERSION programs on your system and make symlinks to them from
$HOME/bin, with no -VERSION suffixes, and then make sure $HOME/bin is
first in your PATH.
Also, note that the recommended way to create the configure script is
'autoreconf -i -v'. Does that work for you?
