Attached is a patch to fix this. Thanks for finding the bug.
For your spell checker bug: maybe the problems don't happen if the cursor
starts out at the beginning of the line? I don't know about the specific
behavior you describe, but some spell checker bugs are fixed by the big
patch at http://www.math.cornell.edu/~dbenbenn/nano/nano.patch.
